I’m getting over a mild/moderate lower back inflammation and have found these patches to be a very useful part of rehabbing (along with NSAIDs and a stretching regime). I’d recommend trying them for any condition for which heat has been prescribed as a treatment modality, as the physiological effect of capsicum absorption is basically the same as for applied heat, namely increase in blood circulation to the area. The Salonpas formulation is, in my experience, considerably more effective than something like the Tiger Balm menthol patches that contain a small amount of capsicum, not enough to provide a real warming effect. I haven’t found it intolerably hot, either, unlike some of the capsaicin ointments or roll-ons that have a higher percentage of active ingredient. There is at least one clone of this Salonpas patch sold at CVS; it is similarly effective but made with a stiffer and therefore less comfortable backing.

I have a few problems with my back and I’ve tried a lot of patches, creams and other topical treatments.
This one is my favorite but buy just one to try first. It does get quite hot feeling and it’s probably too much for people who are sensitive to pepper.
For me, it works really well. The patches cover a fair amount of area and go on fairly easily. They move like fabric and are nice and thin so they don’t show through clothes and the heat is strong. They don’t have an overwhelming scent like a lot of these products do. They last a long time after application. I’ve worn them for 8 hours at a time.
Absolutely my favorite thing to use on bad days, even more than my TENS unit because it doesn’t show while still providing a lot of relief.

I have chronic back pain that is a daily problem for me. I prefer not to take pain meds (percocet, vicondin, etc.) until it gets unbearable, but haven’t had much luck with other types of treatment (massage, chiro, acupuncture, etc.) So I’m always looking for something that will at least help relieve the pain, particularly if I know I’m going to be running around a lot and aggravating the problem. I’ve used capsicum arthritis cream in the past for other issues and found it very effective, so thought I’d give these back patches a try.
The patch is about 5×7 inches, the little sketch on the front of the package shows the area it can cover fairly well. It has holes in it for ventilation, and is fairly thin and flexible. I found that the patch stayed in place very nicely and is not so stiff as to make it too uncomfortable to bend and move. I’ve also used lidocaine patches on my back and found that this patch stayed in place better, and pretty much never came off on its own. You cannot however, remove it and reuse it once it’s been used.
Now, if you’re not familiar with capsicum, it is an extract from chili peppers that has pain relief properties. Since it’s from hot peppers, it also produces a fair amount of heat. You don’t want to use this patch, for instance, and then take a hot shower. You’ll also find if you are leaning against it, such as in a car, it will get quite hot, almost to the point of getting burnt. You’ll also find this can be something that will linger and should be careful about using patches over consecutive days. I find the heat and pain relief a very nice combo and gives me good results for up to 8 hours which is far better than most patches. The price is a little higher than most cold-hot pain patches, but the results worth it for occasional use.
